What we check

Every element your label must get right

A single labelling error can delay a shipment, trigger a product recall, or result in a regulatory fine. TGC checks every element against the specific requirements of your target market.

Mandatory label elements

Product name, net quantity, country of origin, responsible person or importer details - every field required by regulation, checked against your specific market.

Allergen and ingredient declarations

Allergen highlighting requirements vary significantly between EU, UK and US rules. We check the declaration format, order, highlighting method, and completeness against the applicable regulation.

Nutrition and health claims

Substantiation, permitted claim wording, and conditions of use. Health claims that are permitted in the US may be prohibited in the EU - we flag every discrepancy and suggest compliant alternatives.

Language and translation requirements

Many markets require official language labelling. We verify which languages are mandatory, minimum font size rules, and whether your translations meet regulatory standards.

Formatting, font size and layout

Minimum type size for mandatory fields, required legibility, prominence of warning statements, and any mandatory pictogram or symbol requirements for your product category.

Date marking and storage instructions

Best before, use by, minimum durability - the correct format depends on your product category and target market. We check the format, placement, and any accompanying temperature statements required.

Why labels fail

The 6 most common reasons product labels are rejected at customs

These are the errors TGC catches most frequently. Each one can delay or block your shipment - and none of them require a full redesign to fix.

Missing or incorrectly formatted responsible person / importer details

EU and UK regulations require a named Responsible Person with a registered address within the jurisdiction. Post-Brexit, the EU and UK require separate Responsible Persons. This single error blocks the product at border.

Health or nutrition claims not permitted in the target market

A claim approved by the FDA may be a prohibited claim under EU regulations. Conversely, many EU-approved health claims are not permitted under FDA regulations. TGC identifies every non-compliant claim and provides a compliant alternative.

Allergen declaration not in the correct format

EU Regulation 1169/2011 requires allergens to be emphasised within the ingredient list (e.g. bold). Simply listing them separately is not sufficient. Font size requirements also apply to the full ingredient declaration.

Language requirements not met

Many EU member states require labelling in the official national language. Products sold across multiple EU markets often need multi-language labels. Using only English is insufficient for most Continental European markets.

Incorrect date marking format for the product category

"Best before" and "use by" are not interchangeable - they have specific regulatory meanings and trigger different consumer and retailer obligations. Using the wrong format is a common labelling violation for food and supplement brands.

Mandatory warning statements missing for regulated ingredients

Certain ingredients trigger mandatory warning statements - caffeine, polyols, certain sweeteners, herbal ingredients. These requirements vary by market and are frequently overlooked when products are adapted for new territories.

Client outcome

What clients say

"Our EU label had three non-compliant health claims we weren't aware of - claims that are standard in the US but prohibited under EU nutrition regulation. TGC's review caught them before we shipped 8,000 units. The findings summary was clear and gave us exactly what we needed to correct the label before shipping."

Common questions

Label review - frequently asked questions

A TGC label review checks your product label against all mandatory regulatory requirements for your target market. This includes mandatory elements (product name, net quantity, importer details), claims compliance, allergen declarations, nutrition labelling, language requirements, date marking format, and formatting rules specific to the destination market.
We accept labels in PDF, AI (Adobe Illustrator), EPS, PNG, or JPG format. We can work with any of these formats to complete the compliance review and produce your findings summary.
EU-wide regulations form the foundation and apply consistently across all member states, so one EU review covers the core regulatory requirements. That said, language is not the only variable - individual member states can have additional national laws and different registration or notification bodies, so country-level nuances do need to be considered. Where you are selling into multiple specific member states, we review those nuances as part of a single engagement rather than as separate reviews. Contact us to confirm the scope for your specific markets.
A label review specifically assesses your product label artwork against labelling regulations for your target market. An expedited audit is a broader compliance assessment covering your entire product - including formulation, ingredient compliance, registration requirements, and market authorisation - not just the label. If you're unsure which you need, contact us and we'll guide you to the right service.
